What are
Ecofiscal policies?

“Ecofiscal policies brings together a set of economic tools aimed at discouraging activities that are harmful to the envi-ronment or encouraging those that are favourable to it—and fostering innovation.

Ecofiscal measures are mainly, but not exclusively, based on the principles of the Sustainable Development Act, such as the principle of internalization of costs, the polluter-pays principle, and the user-pays principle.1”

The different types of measures

  • Taxes and tax incentives
  • Tariffs and duties
  • Exchangeable permits
  • Deposits
  • Fines and other penalties
  • Regulatory charges
